PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELIZABETH MAY:
I am a twenty-two-year-old fashion and fantasy photographer based out of California (soon to be the United Kingdom).
My focus in photography lies in the strange and the beautiful, and my journey behind the lens began when I was just sixteen-years-old. What started out as a series of self portraits to be sent to far off family members transformed into a method of self-expression. More than a photographer, I consider myself a storyteller.
My photos start off with initial conceptions based purely on aesthetics-the wardrobe, the make up, the overall 'look'. In the process of taking photos, they become something more. The meaning of a photograph becomes more apparent to me as I am watching a story unfold, and each photograph becomes part of a whole story.
From lighting to colour to a model's expression, each is a different aspect to the overall tale. For me, there has to be tangible emotion to evoke something in a viewer. My photos depict strong women of myth or fragile dolls or dark romances. I don't strive to take 'pretty' pictures, but to create fairytales and dreams and nightmares that touch people on a deep, emotional level.
I have been honored to have my photography published internationally in magazines, websites and on book covers, with my most recent features ranging from Photography Monthly to Harlequin Publishing.
